You Caught a Mouse. How Did It Get In?

That’s often the question that matters most. A trap tells you a mouse was inside; it doesn’t tell you where it entered. If an opening remains accessible, another mouse can use it after the first one is gone.

Mice may enter around doors, utility lines, foundations, or other small gaps. They can then travel through protected areas before you notice them in a kitchen or living space. What You Should Know About Mice

They don’t need a large opening

A mouse fits through a hole about ¼ inch wide—the width of a pencil. Gaps around doors, pipes, utility lines, and the foundation are easy to overlook because they don’t look large enough to let an animal inside.

Most mouse activity stays out of sight

Mice spend much of their time in protected spaces, including wall voids, storage areas, and behind appliances. The mouse you see tells you where it appeared, but activity elsewhere in the property often goes unnoticed.

A small problem can grow quickly

A mouse pregnancy lasts about three weeks, and young mice reach breeding age within weeks. Seeing one mouse doesn’t tell you how many are present, but repeated sightings or fresh droppings deserve a closer look.

They contaminate more than the food they eat

Mice travel across shelves, counters, and stored items, leaving droppings and urine along their routes. Finding chewed packaging is only part of the concern; food and surfaces they’ve contacted also need attention.

Droppings: Small, dark droppings in cabinets, pantries, basements, garages, or along walls point to areas mice are using. Fresh droppings help us narrow down where activity is happening now.
Scratching sounds: Movement inside a wall or ceiling often gets your attention when the house is quiet. We inspect the surrounding areas to find evidence rather than assuming the sound tells us exactly where the mice entered.
Gnaw marks: Mice chew through food packaging and damage stored items and other materials. The location of that damage helps us trace their activity.
Nesting material: Shredded paper, fabric, or insulation gathered in a protected spot indicates mice have been using that area for shelter.
Mouse sightings: Seeing one run along a wall, behind an appliance, or through a garage tells you where to start looking for other evidence.

What You Can Do to Help Prevent Mice

Mouse prevention works best when you address both access to the building and the food and shelter mice find once they’re near it. Here are a few steps that make a difference:

Store food securely. Keep pantry items, pet food, and birdseed in sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids. Pay attention to food stored in garages and basements, too.
Clean up food sources. Wipe up crumbs and spills, keep garbage covered, and pick up uneaten pet food at night. Small amounts of food give mice a reason to keep exploring.
Reduce places to hide. Clear excess cardboard and clutter from storage areas, especially along walls. This also makes new droppings and other signs easier to spot.
Address entry points. Gaps around doors, pipes, utility lines, and the foundation give mice access. During our inspection, we identify the openings that need attention and explain the exclusion work we recommend.
