Cockroach Control Starts With Identifying the Problem

Cockroaches do not all behave the same way, and the activity you see may be only a small part of what is happening inside the property. Before deciding how to treat, we look at the cockroach species, the areas where activity is concentrated and the conditions allowing it to continue.

On many German cockroach calls, we find activity around refrigerators, cooking equipment, sinks, cabinet hinges and plumbing openings. These areas provide the warmth, moisture, food residue and protected hiding spaces German roaches need.

Larger cockroaches, including American cockroaches, may be connected to basements, utility areas, drains or openings around the exterior. Because the source can be different, treating them the same way as German roaches may not solve the problem.

By determining what type of cockroach is present and where it is coming from, we can focus the service on the areas that actually need attention instead of applying the same treatment throughout every property.

What Are the Signs of a Cockroach Infestation

Sometimes the first sign is a live cockroach in the kitchen or bathroom. In other cases, evidence appears inside cabinets, beneath appliances or around plumbing before cockroaches are regularly seen out in the open.

Common signs of cockroach activity include:

  • Live cockroaches: Activity is often noticed at night, although cockroaches may also appear during the day when hiding areas are disturbed or activity has increased.
  • Droppings: Small, dark specks may collect inside cabinets, along edges, beneath sinks or near appliances.
  • Egg capsules: Cockroach egg cases, known as oothecae, may be found in cabinet corners, cracks or other protected areas.

  • Recurring activity: Seeing cockroaches after using store-bought sprays or baits may mean hidden activity remains elsewhere in the property.

Why Cockroach Problems Continue After DIY Treatment

Store-bought sprays and baits can reduce some of the cockroaches you see, while the main population remains inside protected harborage areas—the cabinet gaps, appliance areas, wall openings and plumbing penetrations where cockroaches hide and breed.

Common reasons cockroach activity continues include:

  • Treatment reaches exposed cockroaches but not the primary hiding and breeding areas.
  • Gel bait is placed away from active feeding and travel routes.
  • Repellent sprays are applied near bait placements and discourage cockroaches from feeding on the bait.
  • Oothecae, or cockroach egg capsules, remain protected after the initial application.
  • Moisture, food residue, clutter or other conducive conditions continue to support activity.
  • Cockroaches move between adjoining apartments or commercial units through shared walls, utility lines and plumbing openings.

Continued activity does not necessarily mean the property is dirty or that nothing was accomplished. It often indicates that the infestation extends beyond the areas initially treated, additional harborage areas are present or follow-up service is needed to continue reducing the population.

1. Inspect and Identify

We inspect where cockroaches have been seen and check nearby cabinets, appliances, plumbing openings and other harborage areas. We also identify whether you are dealing with small German cockroaches or a larger species.

2. Locate the Activity

Droppings, oothecae, live cockroaches and monitoring devices help us determine where activity is concentrated. We also look for moisture, food residue, clutter and other conducive conditions.

3. Apply Targeted Treatment

Based on what we find, treatment can include gel bait, insect growth regulators, crack-and-crevice applications, dust, flushing or vacuuming. Materials are placed where cockroaches hide and travel instead of being applied unnecessarily throughout the property.

4. Monitor and Follow Up

Follow-up service allows us to check the remaining activity, refresh bait placements and adjust the treatment. Established German cockroach infestations and activity involving multiple areas commonly require more than one visit.

Before Treatment
