Your Local Bed Bug Exterminators

Servicing Long Island | Queens | Brooklyn

Bed bugs in Long Island present a significant challenge to eradicate because of their secretive behavior and nocturnal feeding habits.

It is believed that only dirty homes will be infested with bed bugs. The truth is any home is susceptible to bed bugs. Bed bugs hitchhike on humans, and they are not picky about where they infest. Most often bed bugs find their way inside luggage, bags, furniture, or appliances.

Although bed bugs are not known to spread disease, they still result in mental and physical harm. Infestations result in lack of sleep, anemia, and increased stress. Even more, they can cause infections at bite sites.

Seeking professional assistance is often essential for effective management and control. At EM Pest Control, our bed bug experts can eliminate even the most stubborn infestations.

What You Should Know About Bed Bugs

Most adult bed bugs are about 3/16" long and are oval and flat in shape. They are brown to reddish brown in color after a blood meal.

Nymphs (young) resemble adults but are smaller and pale in color. After molting (shedding their skin) they are white in color and then light tan before feeding. Bed bugs have no wings.

The flat, oval shape of bed bugs allows them to hide under mattresses, mattress beads and buttons, in box springs or their coverings as well as in any crevice of a wooden bed frame, such as where wooden members join.

Bed bugs can infest various places, including furniture and electronics, thriving in clutter. Keeping rooms tidy is crucial to prevent their spread.

What Are the Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation?

  • Small reddish brown or black fecal spots on the mattresses, upholstery, covers, sheets, pillowcases, and walls.
  • Molt bed bug skins, their white eggs or empty eggshells.
  • Signs of bed bug bites, including red, itchy bite marks on the legs, arms and other body parts exposed while sleeping as well as blood stains on your bed sheets or pillows.
  • Very heavy infested areas may have a characteristically sweet odor.

Are Bed Bugs Dangerous?

Bed bugs are less dangerous than they are a nuisance. Bed bug bites are virtually painless and do not transmit diseases. However, most people develop an allergic reaction to the saliva transmitted during bites, causing red, itchy welts that can often be relieved with topical steroid creams. After periods of extended exposure, it is possible for humans to reach a point where they no longer have a reaction to bed bug bites, or those reactions may become more severe.

Why Do I Have a Bed Bug Problem?

Like cockroaches, bed bugs are hitchhikers and masters at hiding. You can get bed bugs anywhere such as:

  • Work
  • School
  • Public transportation
  • Movie theaters
  • Retail stores
  • And many more

This variety of habitats helps them thrive and spread, making them hard to control.

How Do I Prevent a Bed Bug Infestation?

  • Inspect your suitcases and bags outdoors before bringing them into the house.
  • Vacuum your suitcase thoroughly before storing it. Also using a garment hand steamer on your luggage is preferable because it can kill any bed bugs or eggs that may have traveled home with you.
  • Wash and dry all your clothes - even those that have not been worn – on high heat.
  • Keep clothes that go to the dry cleaner in a sealed plastic bag until they can be transported.

How Do I Get Rid of Bed Bugs?

The earlier you can tackle a bed bug infestation, the better. Although you may be inclined to DIY pest control when it comes to bed bugs, you are much better off with professional help. DIY efforts may reduce your bed bug population but will not completely get rid of them. You must kill every last bed bug.
