Then the scratching starts again, fresh droppings appear, or another mouse shows up in the kitchen. It feels like the problem came back, but the traps only catch the mice that reach them. The mice showing up afterward were either already hidden elsewhere in the home or entered through openings that were never addressed. Both are possible. Catching a few mice doesn’t mean the property is clear. Other mice could still be hiding in wall voids, attics, basements, crawl spaces, garages, or storage areas. Some never encounter the traps, especially when the traps aren’t placed along their regular travel routes. New mice also enter while exterior openings remain accessible. A gap near a utility line, garage door, foundation vent, or exterior door keeps the route open even after mice inside have been removed. The next step is inspecting the exterior to find the openings they’re using to get inside. ## How Are Mice Getting Into My House? Mice enter through surprisingly small gaps around the exterior. According to the [CDC’s rodent-prevention guidance](https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/rodent-control/seal-up.html), a mouse fits through an opening approximately ¼ inch wide—about the width of a pencil. The opening they use isn’t always close to where they’re seen because mice travel behind walls, between floors, and through other concealed areas.  Common entry points include: - Gaps around utility and air-conditioning lines - Openings beneath exterior doors - Worn seals around garage doors - Damaged foundation or attic vents - Gaps where siding meets the foundation - Openings along the roofline Finding the entry point takes more than checking the area where a mouse was seen.
